Old Schools
- "The old School" which was replaced by the Castlegar N.S. is at 53.29492 , -9.015409 / 53° 17' 41.7114" , -9° 0' 55.4724" ) . This venue featured the first of the Castlegar Discos, and provided a platform for some great local singers (Ryan and Connolly- Nobodys Child, Rhinestone Cowboy). The main promoters were the local Macra Na Feirme (Scully and Heneghan amongst others), as well as far-sighted people who weren't affiliated with anyone in particular. Young people came from the Housing Estates such as Riverside and Mervue, as well as the natives. Today, this premises still exists and is the modern business of Babyworld. See Map on
FlashEarth , Before this, this premises was probably the first development of Chick Gillen's Olympic Boxing Club, an opportunity for the Castlegar and Mervue men, to learn the pugilist art. Around the same time, the famous Irish Dancer by the name of Celine Hession (helped by the affable Judy Tully (Wedding Planner Galway), held classes here as well. - Briarhill old School (roughly; 53.292085 , -8.983368 / 53° 17' 31.506" , -8° 59' 0.1248" ). elevation 141 feet / 42.976 metres ) was knocked within the last few years, and is now the property of the Tesco Supermarket chain (LON:TSCO). For years though, it was lived in by the Donellans, from which the T-Junction got its name - Donnellan's cross (53.292380 , -8.983612 /53° 17' 32.568" , -8° 59' 1.0032" ). Ref.
- Older again- a school may have been on the Tuam Road, nearby the modern place known as Turk's.
